ICONSIAM is the most spectacular shopping mall in Bangkok, and possibly Southeast Asia — a vast, glittering riverside complex that opened in 2018 on the Thonburi-side bank of the Chao Phraya, in the old Khlong San district. Inside, an entire indoor floating market recreates the canals and food of all of Thailand under one roof; outside, a riverside promenade hosts a nightly fountain-and-light show with the city skyline shimmering across the water. ICONSIAM single-handedly turned a quiet, faded stretch of riverbank into one of Bangkok’s most visited destinations, and it has dragged the surrounding Khlong San neighbourhood — a low-key district of old shophouses, temples and the Princess Mother’s memorial park — back into the spotlight.
ICONSIAM — the mall as spectacle
Calling ICONSIAM a mall undersells it. Across its floors you will find the full sweep of luxury brands, a department store, Thailand’s first Apple Store on the river, cinemas, a huge variety of restaurants, and design and lifestyle shops. The architecture is genuinely impressive — soaring atriums, river-facing windows, and a riverside terrace that is one of the best free vantage points in the city for the Chao Phraya and the skyline beyond. It is fully air-conditioned, which makes it a perfect refuge during the brutal hot season or a rainy-season downpour; see the Bangkok in the rain guide and the best malls guide.
SookSiam — the indoor floating market
The single most worthwhile thing inside ICONSIAM is SookSiam, an enormous indoor “floating market” on the ground floor that recreates the canals, crafts and — crucially — the food of all 77 Thai provinces under one roof. Wooden boats, faux waterways, regional architecture and hundreds of vendors sell authentic dishes and snacks from every corner of Thailand: northern khao soi, southern curries, Isaan grills, central-plains sweets, and specialities you would normally have to travel the country to find. It is air-conditioned, clean and affordable, and while it is a curated, theme-park version of a floating market, the food is genuinely good and the variety unmatched. For real floating markets, see the floating markets guide.
The riverside fountain show and the views
Each evening, ICONSIAM’s riverside promenade stages ICONIC Multimedia Water Features — a choreographed fountain, light and music show on the river, free to watch from the terrace. Combined with the lit-up skyline of the city across the water and the river traffic gliding past, it is one of Bangkok’s best free evening spectacles. The riverside terrace and the upper floors are also superb spots for a skyline view, drink in hand. Several dinner cruises and the Alangka cruise depart from the ICONSIAM pier — the Alangka cruise from ICONSIAM is a stylish way to combine the mall with a river dinner.
Getting there is half the fun — the river
ICONSIAM is best reached by water, which is part of its appeal. Free shuttle boats run frequently from Sathorn pier (below BTS Saphan Taksin) and from other piers, gliding you across the river to the mall’s own dock. The new BTS Gold Line also serves it at Charoen Nakhon station, connecting to the main Skytrain network at Krung Thon Buri. Because it sits on the river, ICONSIAM pairs perfectly with a Chao Phraya cruise — many start or end here. The hop-on-hop-off river pass includes the ICONSIAM stop, and the luxury dinner cruise and newest luxury Chao Phraya rooftop cruise make an evening of it. See the Chao Phraya boats guide.
Khlong San — the neighbourhood around the mall
Beyond the glamour of the mall, Khlong San is an old, quietly interesting riverside district worth a short wander. The Princess Mother Memorial Park is a peaceful green space and museum dedicated to the much-loved mother of the late King Bhumibol, built on the site of her childhood neighbourhood. Nearby are old shophouse lanes, local markets and small temples, plus the Peninsula and other luxury hotels strung along this bank. It is the Thonburi side of the river, so it connects to the canal-laced world of Thonburi and the khlongs and looks across to the main riverside and the spire of Wat Arun just upriver.
A family-friendly and rainy-day choice
ICONSIAM is one of the easiest places in Bangkok to spend time with kids or to wait out bad weather. It is cool, clean, stroller-friendly and packed with food options to suit everyone, and SookSiam keeps children entertained. Combine it with a shuttle-boat ride (an adventure in itself) and an evening fountain show and you have a low-stress half-day. See the Bangkok with kids guide and the rainy-day-with-kids guide. For the broader shopping picture, see the shopping guide and where to stay.
Eating at ICONSIAM and Khlong San
Food options are vast: SookSiam for affordable all-Thailand street food, upmarket food halls and international chains across the mall floors, and genuine fine dining with river views on the upper terraces. Several riverside restaurants face the water and the skyline. For a special meal, the Chao Phraya Princess dinner-cruise ticket turns dinner into a river journey. Just inland and across the river, the food neighbourhoods of Bang Rak and Charoenkrung add street-food depth.
Getting there and around
By BTS Gold Line: Charoen Nakhon station serves ICONSIAM directly; transfer from the main Skytrain network at Krung Thon Buri (Silom Line).
By free shuttle boat: From Sathorn pier (below BTS Saphan Taksin) and other piers — frequent, free and scenic. The classic way to arrive.
By Grab or taxi: Straightforward to the mall’s entrance, but the river or Gold Line is more fun and avoids bridge traffic. See the Grab and taxi guide.
Frequently asked questions about ICONSIAM & Khlong San
What is special about ICONSIAM compared with other Bangkok malls?
Its scale, its riverside setting and SookSiam — an indoor “floating market” recreating the food and crafts of all 77 Thai provinces under one air-conditioned roof. The free nightly riverside fountain-and-light show and the skyline views across the Chao Phraya make it a destination in its own right, not just a place to shop.
How do I get to ICONSIAM?
The easiest and most scenic way is a free shuttle boat from Sathorn pier (below BTS Saphan Taksin), which crosses the river to the mall’s own dock. Alternatively, the BTS Gold Line’s Charoen Nakhon station serves it directly, connecting to the main Skytrain at Krung Thon Buri. Grab and taxi work too.
Is SookSiam worth visiting?
Yes — it is the highlight inside ICONSIAM. It gathers authentic regional Thai food from across the country (northern khao soi, southern curries, Isaan grills and more) in one affordable, air-conditioned space. It is a curated version of a floating market rather than the real thing, but the food is genuinely good and the variety is unmatched in one location.
When is the ICONSIAM fountain show?
The riverside multimedia water-and-light show runs in the evenings on the mall’s river promenade and is free to watch. Arrive in the late afternoon to enjoy the riverside terrace and the skyline, then stay for the show after dark — it is one of Bangkok’s best free evening spectacles.
Is ICONSIAM good for families or a rainy day?
Very much so. It is fully air-conditioned, clean, stroller-friendly and full of food and entertainment, making it ideal for kids or for waiting out a hot afternoon or a rainy-season downpour. The shuttle-boat ride over is an adventure in itself, and the evening fountain show is a crowd-pleaser.
What else is around in Khlong San?
The quieter old riverside district around the mall includes the peaceful Princess Mother Memorial Park and museum, old shophouse lanes, small temples and luxury riverside hotels like the Peninsula. It sits on the Thonburi side, linking to the canal world of Thonburi and looking across to Wat Arun and the main riverside.
